About the Logo:Az Carmen, Ph.D., (Chickasaw) developed the C. A. R. E. S. logo after her husband’s cancer was prevented with colorectal screening. Her drawing shares her personal experience and shows how colorectal cancers are experienced not just by the patient, but by the entire family. The experience of colorectal cancer is tied to life, health, and family.
The goal of Urban Indian C.A.R.E.S. (Colon and Rectal Education and Screening)
is to promote education, testing, and treatment of colorectal cancer for urban
American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) through the Urban Indian Health
Organizations (UIHO) nationwide.
• 67% of American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/AN) live in urban areas.*
• Many urban AI/AN depend on Urban Indian Health Organizations (UIHO)
for their health care.
• Colon cancer is the second most common cancer for AI/AN women and the
third for AI/AN men.
• AI/AN are more likely to be diagnosed at later stages, when cancer is most
difficult to cure.
• Only 46% of AI/AN in UIHO service areas have been screened for colon
cancer, compared with 60% of Caucasians.^*2000 US Census

American Indian/Alaska Native Project Newsletter Spring 2008
In May 2007, ten American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) teams gathered in Portland, Oregon, for the Dialogue for Action AI/AN Working Meeting on colorectal cancer (CRC). The two-day meeting provided a forum for the teams to come together to discuss how to decrease CRC in their communities by increasing CRC awareness, education and screening. At the conclusion of the two-day meeting, each of the teams had begun crafting an action plan to implement in their communities. Since that time, they have made measurable progress in the face of varied and unique challenges.Urban Indian Quarterly
