The Urban Indian Health Institute’s WEAVING Project
Summer Webinar Series

Webinars provide an opportunity for information sharing and networking among urban Indian health organizations (UIHO), state breast and cervical cancer early detection programs (BCCEDP), other state cancer programs and other organizations that address cancer prevention.

Webinar topics are selected to support cancer prevention efforts for urban American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) women and the broader urban AI/AN community, and to encourage collaborations between agencies working to support the health of urban AI/AN communities.

*Webinar 1: Roundtable Discussion on Cancer Screening (Breast, Cervical and Colorectal Cancer)
Held July 26, 2011

*Special webinar. This webinar was a roundtable discussion held at the Seattle Indian Health Board’s 6th Annual Urban Indian Health Conference, July 26-27 2011, Seattle, WA. For those unable to attend in person, the session was broadcast as a webinar to allow for long-distance participation.

This roundtable discussion provided an opportunity for participants to share information about successes and challenges around outreach and recruitment, on-site screening and referral services for breast, cervical and/or colorectal cancers. Participants also had an opportunity to pose questions to the group for broad information sharing, and to discuss UIHO priorities around cancer screening.

In this roundtable format, guest speakers were invited to share specific information with the group, followed by a facilitated question/answer and discussion opportunity. Participants were encouraged to bring questions or success stories that they would like to share during the open discussion.


Webinar 2: CDC’s National Comprehensive Cancer Control Program

In this webinar Ann Larkin, MPH and Team Lead, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Division of Cancer Prevention and Control (DCPC), Comprehensive Cancer Control Branch (CCCB), will present an overview of the of the CDC’s National Comprehensive Cancer Control Program (NCCCP). In addition, Ginny Furshong, Program Director for the Montana Comprehensive Cancer Control Program, will share information about Montana’s Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition and discuss opportunities for collaborations between UIHO and their state Comprehensive Cancer Control program. Updates on the UIHI’s WEAVING Project will also be provided to the group.


Webinar 3: Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Community Profiles

The Susan G. Komen Community Profiles, developed by the local Komen affiliate offices, are a helpful resource for breast cancer information in the local community. These resources can be used to inform grant writing, program development and program planning. The Community Profiles also represent an exciting potential opportunity for urban Indian health organization (UIHO) involvement with their local Komen affiliate office. In this webinar, Dr. Nadine Barrett, Manager, Community Health at Susan G. Komen for the Cure Global Headquarters and Gail Brownmiller, Director of Community Programs at Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Oregon & SW Washington Affiliate, will introduce the Community Profiles, suggest ways that the Community Profiles can be used by UIHO in their program efforts, and discuss potential opportunities for UIHO involvement in the development of their local Community Profile.
